Significant changes to the building legislation are taking place today, January 31st 2018.
The changes will affect Building Practitioners, Building Surveyors and Building Owners:
Changes to how Building Practitioners operate is a significant reform that gives the VBA two additional powers to act. The VBA can now:
- Enter building and plumbing sites, as well as business premises, to conduct inspections.
- Gather the information required to enforce compliance with the Building Act and the Building Regulations. This may also include the seizure of samples of building materials.
Other key reforms you need to know about include changes to the emergency entry powers of the VBA and penalties for giving false or misleading information to the VBA.
Building Surveyors and Building Owners
Key reforms regarding changes to the appointment and termination of a private building surveyor (PBS), as well as the ability for a PBS to transfer their functions to another PBS in certain circumstances, are taking place. These could include sickness, going on holidays and retirement.
