The Power of Long-Term Planning

In todays world the biggest challenge facing small business in the building industry is the ability to forward think and plan long-term. How much time do you spend working IN your business rather than ON your business? If you still consider yourself ‘hands on’ in your business and don’t have a support team around you, you’re more than likely failing already.

While running around like a headless chook trying to manage all areas of your business, stop and think about whether any of these issues apply to you:

  • Constantly feeling overwhelmed
  • Struggling to get things done on time
  • Longer hours and getting nowhere
  • Less time with family and friends
  • Beating yourself up for not being where you want to be

Whilst all those above points are 100% relevant, the last one rings the truest for most small business owners. How do you know where you want to be if you’re not planning and setting a course for your business?

‘Fail to plan, plan to fail.’

The problem is, most business owners will overestimate what they will do the in the first 12 months, but underestimate what they can achieve in 10 years. Sound familiar? Ask yourself, why did you get into business? Was it to make more money, to have more time or to go on holidays every few months?

How’s that working out for you??

A simple and effective way of planning for the long term whilst also focusing on what you can achieve today can be broken down into a few sections that will give your business both a definitive purpose and clear path to follow.

It starts with purpose. What is the purpose of your business? Why did you get into business? In 10 years from now where do you want to be?

Once you’ve decided your purpose, what is your mission? What is the mission your business is setting out to achieve? If you could fast forward 5 years what will you achieve that aligns with your purpose?

If you can answer these questions with a definite answer, its now time to start planning long term!

You’ve already decided your 10-year and 5-year goals, but how can you break it down to the one thing you can do today?

Think of it as a hierarchy chart 10 years from today right back down to right now!

Purpose (10 years)

You’ve planned your 10-year goal, so what can you achieve over the next 5 years that aligns with this purpose?

Mission (5 years)

The next 5 years will set you on the path of being ‘on purpose’ what are some of the long term plans you will need to achieve to align with your purpose?

This year

What do you need to achieve this year and the 4 years after, that aligns with your mission and purpose?

This month

Once you’ve listed your plans for this year that aligns with your mission and purpose, what do you need to achieve this month that will keep you on target with your yearly, 5 year and 10-year goals.

This week

What’re the goals you need to achieve this week that have been broken down from your monthly goals that align with your long-term plans?

Today

What’s the ONE thing you can do today that aligns with your weekly goals, that aligns with your monthly and yearly goals, that will ultimately help you achieve your mission and purpose as a business owner?

It all starts with one thing… what’s the one thing you can do right now to achieve your purpose?
